Winemaker Notes

As every year, the Minervois expresses the sun-filled and spicy personality of the Mediterranean Syrah in harmony with the old Grenache softness from Pépieux vineyards and the intense Carignan. Maturing in tank, which is the case for 30% of the wine, preserves this crunchy fruit, immediately appreciable.

Critical Acclaim

WS 90
Wine Spectator
Chewy yet plush, with plenty of cream and spice to the red raspberry and plum flavors, which feature hints of red peach. The firm finish of slate, smoke and spice is filled with minerally notes. Syrah and Grenache.

Hecht & Bannier, Minervois, Languedoc-Roussillon, France
Image of winery
Formed in 2002, Hecht & Bannier makes wines intended to become reference points for the Languedoc-Roussillon, France’s largest and most confounding winemaking region. Founders Gregory Hecht and François Bannier: "To conserve the typical Mediterranean strength in our wines while preserving balance and crispness, this is our mantra for all the appellations we produce."

Minervois

View all wine

Recognized for its concentrated and sultry reds made predominantly of Carignan, Grenache and Syrah, this western Languedoc appellation is also famous for the charming and delicate fortified Vin Doux Naturel called Muscat de St. Jean de Minervois. The dry rosé and white wines of Minervois are also worth seeking out.

Other Red Blends

With hundreds of red grape varieties to choose from, winemakers have the freedom to create a virtually endless assortment of blended wines. In many European regions, strict laws are in place determining the set of varieties that may be used, but in the New World experimentation is permitted and encouraged. Blending can be utilized to create complex wines with many different layers of flavors and aromas, or to create more balanced wines. For example, a variety that is soft and full-bodied may be combined with one that is lighter with naturally high acidity. Sometimes small amounts of a particular variety are added to boost color or aromatics. Blending can take place before or after fermentation, with the latter, more popular option giving more control to the winemaker over the final qualities of the wine.
