Winemaker Notes

A fruity aroma displaying strawberry, cranberry and cherry characters with hints of stalk, forest floor, fruit mince, candy and roses. The strawberry and cherry flavours carry on to the palate and combine with blackberry, red Jubes and amaretto elements to produce a wine that is full of fruit and interest. It’s a light to medium bodied wine that is generous in flavour, with subtle oak, soft acidity and attractive soft tannin.

From Karridale, a cool southern Margaret River subregion, this needs some aeration before the reductive damp earth and jerky notes integrate with the raspberry cordial, fresh violets and herbal notes. When they do, aromatics are lovely. The palate shows some richness and roundness, by Pinot standards, but with welcome freshness, chalky tannins and a cocktail bitters flavor to the finish.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

Home to some of Australia’s most elegant and long-lived red and white wines, Margaret River is situated in the farthest reaches of Western Australia. Relatively warm and dry, the region is cooled by breezes from the Indian Ocean. Margaret River takes some inspiration from Bordeaux, producing top-quality Cabernet Sauvignons and Bordeaux Blends with firm structure, mouthwatering acidity, balanced alcohol and notes of herbs and spice. For white wines, refreshing blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon as well as complex, age-worthy Chardonnays are regional specialties.
