    Winemaker Notes

This lovely 2016 vintage aromatics are enough to keep you satisfied with only your nose in the glass. Overflowing with wild strawberry, blue and black berries, Lincoln rose, and just a tease of lilac- this wine continues to delight. Found amidst the fruit and florals are hints of light pepper and caramel. Moving into the soft, round, velvety mouth we find bright tart raspberry jam balanced with soft oak and smooth tannins. This Merlot will make you question why you ever thought badly of this noble varietal.

    Hagafen, California
Hagafen Cellars is located in the Napa Valley, in the heart of California’s premier wine grape region. Less than a mile south of the famed Stags Leap District and twenty yards from the Oak Knoll District--Napa’s newest and most exciting of American Viticultural Areas--the well-drained soil is ideal for the growth and production of ripe and rich, intensely fruity small lot estate bottled wines.

Owned and operated by Irit and Ernie Weir, the winery was founded in 1979, and the first commercially released vintage was harvested in 1980. In the ensuing years, Hagafen has grown from a small partnership producing wine with grapes from Winery Lake Vineyard, then owned by Rene DiRosa, to a well-established wine company whose wines are distributed throughout North America and overseas. Since 1980 Hagafen wines have been served on numerous occasions at the White House to visiting foreign dignitaries. Ernie’s daily involvement in the two sides of wine production, grape growing and winemaking, ensures the superb quality of the wines.

As Napa Valley’s third most planted grape, Napa Valley Merlot shows time and time again its potential to produce exceptional results. Napa’s vaunted combination of climate, soil and the human factor of winemaking expertise lead to big, ripe, cellar-worthy and world-class versions.

Whether made by itself in single varietal bottlings or as an important role in Bordeaux Blends, Merlot continues a prominent role in this famous region. While Cabernet typically takes the lead role, Merlot’s contribution—even at 10% to 20% or so—is significant indeed. Often described as “the flesh on Cabernet’s bones,” Merlot lends a soft, round and plush character that beautifully complements Cabernet’s linear, full-throttle structure. Its flavors of plums plus subtle herbs and mint also dovetail nicely with Cabernet’s blackberry and cassis.
