Winemaker Notes

A Bordeaux-inspired red that blends Merlot, Cabernet and affordability into a highly drinkable wine that's appreciated by the contemplative connoisseur and the casual imbiber. The 2019 vintage is a plush and full-bodied version of our Mountain Cuvee with assertive structure complimented by a delicate fresh red fruit character. You'll notice aromas of Red Earth, Dragon Fruit, and Goji berries followed by flavors of chocolate-covered cherries, crème de cassis and strawberry preserves.

Balanced, robust and smooth, this wine can be enjoyed on its own or paired with wood-fired pizza, backyard burgers or a myriad of cuisines.

Blend: 41% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, 5% Malbec, 5% Cabernet Franc

Based on Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the ruby/purple-hued 2019 Red Wine Sonoma County gives up a juicy, lively style reminiscent of Bordeaux with its red and black currants, tobacco leaf, and cedar aromas and flavors. With beautiful fruit, medium-bodied richness, and silky tannins, it's an undeniably delicious red to enjoy over the coming decade or more.

COMMENTARY: The 2019 Gundlach Bundschu Mountain Cuvée Red Wine delivers excellent ripe fruit rewards on the palate. TASTING NOTES: This wine shines with aromas and flavors of black fruit, licorice, and black tea. Pair it with grilled short ribs. (Tasted: August 4, 2021, San Francisco, CA)

Home to a diverse array of smaller AVAs with varied microclimates and soil types, Sonoma County has something for every wine lover. Physically twice as large as Napa Valley, the region only produces about half the amount of wine but boasts both tremendous quality and variety. With its laid-back atmosphere and down-to-earth attitude, the wineries of Sonoma are appreciated by wine tourists for their friendliness and approachability. The entire county intends to become a 100% sustainable winegrowing region by 2019.

Sonoma County wines are produced with carefully selected grape varieties to reflect the best attributes of their sites—Dry Creek Valley’s consistent sunshine is ideal for Zinfandel, while the warm Alexander Valley is responsible for rich, voluptuous red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are important throughout the county, most notably in the cooler AVAs of Russian River, Sonoma Coast and Carneros. Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Syrah have also found a firm footing here.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.
