Winemaker Notes

A wine of fantastic purity, reminiscent of the 2008 and 2012. With only 10g RS more than the Spatlese in that year, this is perhaps less of a dessert style than an after-dinner wine for a course of creamy cheeses with membrillo and fig jam; or else just on its own. If serving with dessert, try a lighter pastry like key lime pie or pavlova.

Made from grapes with 30/40% botrytised berries, the 2016 Rothenberg Riesling Auslese has a clear citrus color and opens with a bright, fresh and concentrated bouquet of grapefruits, lemons and wet stones. Round and deliciously lush on the palate, this is a mouth-filling, highly elegant, piquant and salty Auslese with nice grip, grapefruit flavors on the aftertaste and pencil wood on the finish. Really stimulating. Very erotic and provided with great aging potential

An interesting auslese, with aromas of hops and geranium oil, while the palate shows notes of candied ginger, honey, and ruby grapefruit, with hints of cream and cinnamon. Shows density, yet the acidity keeps this lively and full of energy. Delicious now, but the best is yet to come.

Riesling possesses a remarkable ability to reflect the character of wherever it is grown while still maintaining its identity. A regal variety of incredible purity and precision, this versatile grape can be just as enjoyable dry or sweet, young or old, still or sparkling and can age longer than nearly any other white variety. Somm Secret—Given how difficult it is to discern the level of sweetness in a Riesling from the label, here are some clues to find the dry ones. First, look for the world “trocken.” (“Halbtrocken” or “feinherb” mean off-dry.) Also a higher abv usually indicates a drier Riesling.

Extending south from the Rheingau region to become a valley of gently rolling hills, Rheinhessen is Germany’s largest wine region. The best Rieslings of Rheinhessen, often characterized by smoky, peach and citrus aromas, come from vines grown in the red soils of the Rheinterrasse.
