Winemaker Notes

Always a pleasure and always great value for Riesling-lovers, the Jean-Baptiste 2017 is a blend created from the lower terraces of the estate's three top vineyard sites: Nierstein Hipping, Nierstein Pettenthal and Nackenheim Rothenberg (all grand cru sites.) Technically a feinherb style, or "balanced off-dry," with passionfruit, peaches and pink lemonade flavors bursting through its juicy, electric palate, girded by thumping red slate. This is a wine we've used again and again to introduce consumers to the joys of German Riesling.

JS 91
James Suckling

A juicy and vibrant Kabinett that's a great food wine, thanks to the medium-dry balance, generous yet controlled peaches and the very clean, vibrant finish. Drink or hold.

WS 90
Wine Spectator

Enticing mineral, pear and citrus aromas and flavors mark this bright and vibrant kabinett. A perfect representative of the category, without much sweetness, but elegant and thirst-quenching. Drink now through 2025.

Gunderloch, Germany
Gunderloch Winery Image
The Gunderloch estate in Nackenheim, just southwest of Frankfurt, was founded in 1890 by the banker Carl Gunderloch on the banks of the river Rhine. From the beginning, the estate was run with a strict commitment to quality. He bought top vineyard sites, including a large part of great Nackenheim Rothenberg. Since its foundation, the estate has stayed in the same family, now in its fifth generation, with Agnes and Fritz Hasselbach. It comprises 30 acres of vineyards in the towns of Nacknheim and Nierstein. The principal grape varietal is Riesling, which finds its most powerful espression in the Nackenheim Rothenberg vineyard. The combination of its steepness, exposure, soil structure and proximity to the river gives the Rothenberg vineyard the optimal microclimates for ripening its famous Rieslings.

Extending south from the Rheingau region to become a valley of gently rolling hills, Rheinhessen is Germany’s largest wine region. The best Rieslings of Rheinhessen, often characterized by smoky, peach and citrus aromas, come from vines grown in the red soils of the Rheinterrasse.
