Winemaker Notes

This is a Cabernet lovers' Merlot! Packed with flavors of cherries, blackberries and a hint of dried herbs on the finish, this wine's rich, complex mouthfeel makes it perfect with beef tenderloin, rack of lamb or barbecued pork.

Thanks to our organic and Biodynamic®farming, the vines remained healthy throughoutthe temperature swings, providing us with fullyripe, flavorful grapes.

Connoisseurs' Guide
Young and nervy, and entirely within the familial approach, this Merlot from Grgich Hills favors black cherry fruit with a distinct overlay of green herbs. Its firm construction comes with enough flesh and suppleness to be enjoyable now and to promise a more open stance with two to five years of cellaring. It provides clear contrast to the more rounded, succulent style, and it acts more like Cabernet than most Merlot.

Grgich Hills Estate Winery Video

Winemaker Ivo Jeramaz joined his uncle at Grgich Hills Estate in 1986 and has since become the wineries winemaker and VP of vineyards and production. Ivo has always had a passion for organic and regenerative farming practices. He has committed to farming each of our five estate vineyards organically without the assistance of pesticides or herbicides.

"At Grgich Hills, we grow grapes like my grandfather did, farming without chemicals and pesticides," Ivo says. "Mike taught me early in my career that you need great grapes to make great wine. Over the years, I’ve focused on working with the land. Through our natural farming, it’s been very rewarding to see the soil alive with healthier plants than under conventional farming. It allows the wines to be more authentic—more distinctive."

The health of the vineyards has and always will be a top priority for Grgich Hills Estate. With each glass of their wine, they hope that you can have the confidence that they have grown the best grapes possible in healthy, organically farmed vineyards.

As Napa Valley’s third most planted grape, Napa Valley Merlot shows time and time again its potential to produce exceptional results. Napa’s vaunted combination of climate, soil and the human factor of winemaking expertise lead to big, ripe, cellar-worthy and world-class versions.

Whether made by itself in single varietal bottlings or as an important role in Bordeaux Blends, Merlot continues a prominent role in this famous region. While Cabernet typically takes the lead role, Merlot’s contribution—even at 10% to 20% or so—is significant indeed. Often described as “the flesh on Cabernet’s bones,” Merlot lends a soft, round and plush character that beautifully complements Cabernet’s linear, full-throttle structure. Its flavors of plums plus subtle herbs and mint also dovetail nicely with Cabernet’s blackberry and cassis.
