Winemaker Notes

The 2018 wines have great personality, with freshness and a very fruity character. This vintage is reminiscent of Rioja´s classic vintages: very fluid wines with great potential for aging.

Blend: 80% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha

The updated classical red 2018 Crianza was produced with a blend of 80% Tempranillo from the Sonsierra and 20% Garnacha from Badarán, Cárdenas and Cordovin. It has 14.5% alcohol and a mellow mouthfeel after spending 12 months in 225-liter oak barrels, 50% of them French and 50% American. This is super balanced and seamless, with very subtle and integrated oak, juicy and rich but with balance. A very good Crianza.

Hailed as the star red variety in Spain’s most celebrated wine region, Tempranillo from Rioja, or simply labeled, “Rioja,” produces elegant wines with complex notes of red and black fruit, crushed rock, leather, toast and tobacco, whose best examples are fully capable of decades of improvement in the cellar.

Rioja wines are typically a blend of fruit from its three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, although specific sub-region (zonas), village (municipios) and vineyard (viñedo singular) wines can now be labeled. Rioja Alta and Alavesa, at the highest elevations, are considered to be the source of the brightest, most elegant fruit, while grapes from the warmer and drier, Rioja Oriental, produce wines with deep color, great body and richness.
