    Winemaker Notes

The vineyard sources for our 2007 Old Vine Zinfandel are: Blue Ridge and Morgan Vineyards on Mt. Vaca; Godward Vineyard in Calistoga. Mt. Vaca is the highest peak of the Vaca range, which forms the Eastern border of the Napa Valley. Many of the Zinfandel vines are over a century old. The fruit concentration from these mountain vineyards and the century-old valley floor vineyards ensure our Old Vine Zinfandel has rich flavor extraction, a fruit-forward palate and wonderful layers of complexity from multiple soil types.

Our 2007 vintage Old Vine Zinfandel is a medium-bodied wine of lush, wellintegrated tannins and crisp, bright acidity. The aroma/flavor profile includes: Kirsch, raspberry preserves, red licorice and dark plums with subtle notes of tobacco, dried hay and cedar. The blend is 86% Zinfandel, 9% Charbono and 5% Mourvedre.

    Girard
Thirty years after first planting its vineyards, Girard continues to produce wine reflecting the quality that has made Napa Valley the most famous New World wine growing region in the world. Napa’s rise to fame was punctuated by a renaissance that began at the same time Girard was setting down its own roots.

Today, Girard is experiencing a similar rebirth of sorts. Longtime California vintner Pat Roney purchased the winery shortly after the new millenium. Pat’s career in wine began as a sommelier at Chicago’s renowned Pump Room. Later he returned to his native California, where he ultimately became president of Chateau St. Jean, in Sonoma Valley.

At Girard, Pat continues a tradition of making Chardonnay and Cabernet-based wines. But he is also expanding Girard’s varietal focus to Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, grown on century-old vines that dot the Napa countryside. As it has been in the past, Girard’s goal is to highlight the flavors of Napa Valley and its rich, ripe grapes. A small portion of the winery’s portfolio also comes from grapes grown in Sonoma’s upscale Russian River Valley, where cool weather offers ideal conditions for Chardonnay.

With the right grapes from the right locations, Girard offers a lineup that features both power and finesse—key words in California wine.

    Cotes du Rhone

Typically though if as a baby Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the term Cotes du Rhone actually doesn’t merely apply to the flatter outskirts of that and other more major southern Rhone appellations, it also includes the fringes of well-respected northern Rhone appellations. White can be produced under the appellation name, but very little is actually made.

The region offers some of the best values in France and even some first-rate and age-worthy reds. Red varieties include most of the Chateauneuf-du-Pape varieties like Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsaut, and Counoise, as well as Carignan. White grapes grown include Grenache blanc, Roussanne and Viognier, among others.
