Winemaker Notes

Lively, enticing, varietal characters of zesty lime, fresh lemongrass and passion fruit command the aromatic profile, while subtle hints of thyme emanate as the wine sits in the glass. Ripe, yellow grapefruit, Meyer Lemon and just a hint of gooseberry provide a captivating array of flavors on the palate, balanced by a powerful backbone of refreshing, tangy acidity. The concrete adds a decidedly mineral, saline-like character, and also balances the fruit-driven aromas with subtle hints of gun flint and wet slate. The crisp, lively, natural acidity lends to the overall texture and creates a long, mouthwatering finish.

Critical Acclaim

WS 92
Wine Spectator
Powerful, with finely detailed dried apricot, apple and green pear flavors, supported by firm acidity. The broad finish offers buttery notes that are well-integrated with spicy accents. Best from 2020 through 2024.
WE 91
Wine Enthusiast
This lovely, light-hearted white offers an approachable embrace of firm lemon, fig and mango. It is acid-driven on the palate, with just a touch of lushness on the structured finish. Editors’ Choice

Creamed corn, buttered citrus, and hints of orchard fruits emerge from the 2016 Chardonnay Russian River Selection and it's a solid value. Medium-bodied, lightly textured and clean, it's slightly mid-weight yet is nicely balanced and offers ample pleasure. Drink it over the coming couple of years.

Russian River Valley Wine

Sonoma County, California

View all products

A standout region for its decidedly Californian take on Burgundian varieties, the Russian River Valley is named for the eponymous river that flows through it. While there are warm pockets of the AVA, it is mostly a cool-climate growing region thanks to breezes and fog from the nearby Pacific Ocean.

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir reign supreme in Russian River, with the best examples demonstrating a unique combination of richness and restraint. The cool weather makes Russian River an ideal AVA for sparkling wine production, utilizing the aforementioned varieties. Zinfandel also performs exceptionally well here. Within the Russian River Valley lie the smaller appellations of Chalk Hill and Green Valley. The former, farther from the ocean, is relatively warm, with a focus on red and white Bordeaux varieties. The latter is the coolest, foggiest parcel of the Russian River Valley and is responsible for outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.
