Winemaker Notes

Concentrated, fruit-forward and excellently structured, our impressively lengthy 2012 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is the vintage’s finest expression of our estate vineyards in Northern Sonoma. The nose is decadent, evocative of ripe wild blackberries, juicy blueberries and mocha. On the impressive, dense palate, concentrated notes of blackcurrant and blackberry jam are joined by classic notes of tobacco, dark chocolate, allspice and cedar before a long, lingering finish. Full-bodied yet smooth, the polished, finely grained tannins are indicative of the grape’s roots in the gravelly, loamy Alexander Valley soils, this wine will evolve for 10 to 15 years of cellaring.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is from their Barrelli Creek Vineyard, Scherrer Vineyards, Frei Ranch and the famous Monte Rossa Vineyard. It’s 100% Cabernet Sauvignon with 15.2% natural alcohol and was aged 21 months in 100% new French oak. A classic Cabernet Sauvignon offering notes of unsmoked cigar tobacco, chocolate, espresso roast, blackcurrrants cedar and a touch of barbecue smoke, the wine is full-bodied, dense, moderately tannic, long and mouthfilling. Unfortunately, only 350 cases were made, but this wine is certainly capable of lasting 15-20 years.

While Sonoma County is acclaimed—and rightfully so—for its Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Zinfandels, it also produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the region’s 18 American Viticultural Areas, only a handful produce top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon. These appellations include Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignons made in these appellations can offer a complex array of aromas and flavors. Fruit notes such as blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, black cherry and raspberry often are accompanied by hints of graphite, dusty earth, cigar box, toast and vanilla. The varietal has a rich history in Sonoma, and some of these Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet-based blends rival the best from Napa Valley.
