Winemaker Notes

Magari is an Italian word with several meanings: if only, would that it were true, perhaps. It was chosen because it contains a touch of irony. It is an unassuming name consistent with Angelo Gaja himself. Magari is meant to become Ca'Marcanda's standard bearer.

Complex aromas of flowers, spices and figs with hints of berries. Medium-to-full-bodied, with round and caressing tannins and a long juicy finish.

    A blend of 50% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Ca' Marcanda 2004 Magari is showing beautifully now and continues to hold steady. Nearing the 20-year mark, the bouquet reveals tertiary tones of dried cherry, spice, candied licorice and hints of bitter chocolate. Those classic notes of an aged Tuscan red are enhanced with elegant touches of rusty nail and grilled rosemary in the case of this legendary vintage (one of the first to put this estate on the map). Magari follows to the palate with a pleasantly rich and fleshed-out texture.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.

An outstanding wine region made famous by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who planted Cabernet Sauvignon vines for his own consumption in 1940s on his San Guido estate, and called the resulting wine, Sassicaia. Today the region’s Tuscan reds are based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, which can be made as single varietal wines or blends. The local Sangiovese can make up no more than 50% of the blends. Today Sassicaia has its own DOC designation within the Bogheri DOC appellation.
