Winemaker Notes

This intensely-hued rosé has a fresh and fruity character, dominated by the flavors of cherry and gooseberry, which are typical of Agiorgitiko grapes that grow on the Nemea highlands. Medium-bodied and well balanced, it has a cool and refreshing finish.

This refreshing rosé is a versatile choice for a variety of appetizers and salty dishes. It is an ideal pairing for Chinese and Southeast Asian cuisine.

The 2022 Rosé 4-6h is Gai’a’s Agiorgitiko pink (first produced in 2018), but don't confuse it with the 14-18h. This label has shorter skin contact, four to six hours instead of 14 to 18 hours. It is dry but not at all sharp and comes in at 12.5% alcohol. It has four grams of residual sugar as against 5.85 of total acidity. This seems simply solid, filling the mouth, showing power and emphasizing its flavorful fruit laced with some cherry nuances. It's never candied or too simple, though, as it always shows off the depth, in terms of mouthfeel, that will make it a nice food wine. It finishes dry. The most notable feature today, though, is the power. It grabs the palate and there might be a little tannic pop. It's a pink that will do well with food, but it is versatile. It is a beauty today. I'd like to see it hold nicely for a few years too. It is under screw cap, and it probably will hold reasonably well. In any event, it is impressive today. It's fair to note that not too many people care about holding pinks, so that may not be the most critical issue.

Whether it’s playful and fun or savory and serious, most rosé today is not your grandmother’s White Zinfandel, though that category remains strong. Pink wine has recently become quite trendy, and this time around it’s commonly quite dry. Since the pigment in red wines comes from keeping fermenting juice in contact with the grape skins for an extended period, it follows that a pink wine can be made using just a brief period of skin contact—usually just a couple of days. The resulting color depends on grape variety and winemaking style, ranging from pale salmon to deep magenta.

A large southern region of Greece, the Peloponnese contains the famous appellations of Nemea and Mantineia. While connected to the mainland by a tiny strip of land, essentially the region is a large Mediterranean island and excels in the production of red wine from Agiorghitiko, white from Moscofilero and sweet wine from the Mavrodaphne grape.
