Winemaker Notes

The 2020 ‘Pink’ brings so much of what we love and expect from a traditional Provencal rosé: lively, crisp, and refreshing. The average age of the vines in the blend—well over seventy years—adds a depth of flavor and texture uncommon in most rosés and we believe unobtainable using the saignée method. La Grenouille Rouganté is an intentional rosé. It is pressed directly from the skins and made much like a white wine which accounts for its freshness, vibrancy, and striking faint, blush of color. Rosés of this style are made with thoughts of summer picnics. The lower alcohol suggests a leisurely afternoon on a warm day. But make no mistake, this is a serious wine that can hold its own and even shines in significantly bolder dining choices. We encourage you to experiment. 100% Carignan

COMMENTARY: The 2020 Frog's Leap La Grenouille Rouganté—French for "The Blushing Frog—is a proud and serious pink wine. TASTING NOTES: This outstanding wine exhibits aromatic and pleasing aromas and flavors of red fruit, spice, and mineral notes. Invite a sushi chef for dinner and pour a glass of it. Whether it’s playful and fun or savory and serious, most rosé today is not your grandmother’s White Zinfandel, though that category remains strong. Pink wine has recently become quite trendy, and this time around it’s commonly quite dry. Since the pigment in red wines comes from keeping fermenting juice in contact with the grape skins for an extended period, it follows that a pink wine can be made using just a brief period of skin contact—usually just a couple of days. The resulting color depends on grape variety and winemaking style, ranging from pale salmon to deep magenta.

A large and diverse appellation within California’s North Coast AVA, Mendocino is home to several smaller sub-regions—most notably the Anderson Valley. This scenic region, with rolling hills covered in redwood forests as well as vineyards, is one of the world’s top producers of certified organically-grown grapes. Due to wide geographical and climatic variation, a vast array of wine styles can be found here.
