Winemaker Notes

The 2014 Francis Tannahill Hermit Pinot Noir possesses a dark garnet color that is saturated from rim to center. When first poured into the glass, powerful aromas of dark Bing cherries, Asian spices, cassis, iris, hawthorn, minerals, and clean earth are quick to emerge. As the wine settles down, the nose gains depth and complexity with aromas of blueberries, cinnamon, cedar, gunflint, dried herbs and game. On the palate, the wine is expansive, with powerful flavors of cherry, spice and minerals. During the attack, the wine displays the power, concentration and beautiful ripe tannins of the 2014 vintage. The mid-palate is broad and intense with balancing acidity and stunning focus. Succulent, spicy and dark, the wine moves from the mid-palate into an extremely long finish that goes on and on. Although the 2014 Hermit will drink well now, it possesses the power, structure and balance to age gracefully for another 15-20 years.

Pale to medium ruby-purple, the 2014 Pinot Noir The Hermit has a gorgeous warm cranberry, pomegranate and rhubarb-laced nose with hints of roses, forest floor, baking spices and sautéed herbs. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegantly styled yet explodes with perfumed fruit, supported by grainy tannins and a refreshing acidity, finishing long and spicy.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

Home of the first Pinot noir vineyard of the Willamette Valley, planted by David Lett of Eyrie Vineyard in 1966, today the Dundee Hills AVA remains the most densely planted AVA in the valley (and state). To its north sits the Chehalem Valley and to its south, runs the Willamette River. Within the region’s 12,500 acres, about 1,700 are planted to vine on predominantly basalt-based, volcanic, Jory soil.
