Winemaker Notes

The 2000 Diamond Series Zinfandel has all of the personality and complexity that one would expect from a California Zinfandel. The aromas are dominated by inviting ripe, red currants with exotic spice overtones. The palate is soft, concentrated, and filled with luscious black currants. While the tannins are moderate, the supple texture upholds the core fruit and provides a lengthy finish to the wine. For a deep, intense color and mid-palate structure, we have blended in a small percentage of Petite Sirah. This wine partners well with spicy pasta dishes, like rigatoni pasta with arrabbiata sauce or with strong cheeses, such as Reblochon or Muenster. The 2000 Diamond Series Red Label Zinfandel can be enjoyed now and will cellar nicely over the next five years.

Francis Ford Coppola Winery, re-opened in July 2010, is the latest venture from Francis Ford Coppola, whose passion for wine, food and adventure is nowhere more evident than in this new production – a winery resort located in the heart of Alexander Valley, California. Among the many attractions at the property, Francis Ford Coppola Winery features a wine tasting bar, two restaurants, swimming pools, a movie gallery, a performing arts pavilion and a park area with game tables and bocce courts.

Francis puts it best, saying the winery is meant to be "a wine wonderland, a park of pleasure where people of all ages can enjoy all the best things in life – food, wine, music, dancing, games, swimming and performances of all types. A place to celebrate the love of life."

Undoubtedly proving its merit over and over, Napa Valley is a now a leading force in the world of prestigious red wine regions. Though Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa Valley, other red varieties certainly thrive here. Important but often overlooked include Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties well-regarded on their own as well as for their blending capacities. Very old vine Zinfandel represents an important historical stronghold for the region and Pinot noir is produced in the cooler southern parts, close to the San Pablo Bay.

Perfectly situated running north to south, the valley acts as a corridor, pulling cool, moist air up from the San Pablo Bay in the evenings during the hot days of the growing season, which leads to even and slow grape ripening. Furthermore the valley claims over 100 soil variations including layers of volcanic, gravel, sand and silt—a combination excellent for world-class red wine production.
