Winemaker Notes

The aromatics this wine are bright with sweet notes of black cherry, pomegranate, boysenberry, and truffle. Hints of cinnamon, caraway, and toast are reflective of both Anderson Valley’s spice driven terroir, and the extended aging in French oak barrels. In the mouth, the wine is loaded with rich flavors of dark fruit, cocoa, and spice. The palate is refined with pleasant acidity and elegant tannins that continue to unfold after the last sip. This is a generous wine that will continue to evolve and drink well for at least half a decade.

The 2014 Fel Anderson Valley Pinot Noir offers a richness and purity that is often elusive with this grape variety. Pinot Noir, always a balancing act, sometimes ends up over-extracted when wineries try to eke out power and depth. This wine, artfully escaping those pitfalls, exhibits superb balance. The red fruit and savory notes pair it perfectly with lightly grilled salmon. Drinks nicely now. (Tasted: November 2, 2016, San Francisco, CA)

Anderson Valley, located in Mendocino County just above Sonoma County, is one of California’s coolest AVAs, allowing it a long growing season. Only 15 miles long, the region makes a slice eastward through the mountains, from the frigid Pacific Ocean. Dramatic diurnal temperature variations here preserve grape acidity and thus freshness in the finished wines. These are prime conditions for growing Pinot Noir, and the valley produces many fine versions. Characteristics of Anderson Valley Pinot Noir typically include crisp acidity, cranberry and strawberry notes as well as earthy notes of forest floor and mushroom.

Still Pinot Noir, however, is only part of the story. Pinot Noir, along with Chardonnay, are also grown for Anderson Valley’s exceptional sparkling wines. Produced via the traditional method, these offer a classic toasty note from lees aging, bright, complex fruit notes and a clean, refreshing character.
