Winemaker Notes

The 2014 vintage was a stunner, in general, and almost unbelievable for Cabernet Sauvignon from the Coombsville-Napa Valley AVA. With the generous harvest of 2013 preceding it, we were delighted that the 2014 growing season pushed all the limits in the growing season but stayed on track to the finish. Across the board, the 2014 red wines from our estate were remarkable in their abundant yet fine tannins, bright fruit on the nose, and tremendous length in the finish.

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is deep purple-black and scented of warm black berries and black currants with hints of espresso, tree bark, cumin seed and fenugreek plus Provence herbs and tar. Medium to full-bodied, it is muscular with firm, chewy tannins, lovely freshness and good length.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.
