Winemaker Notes

#84 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2025

Inky ruby-garnet in color, this expansive wine unveils a complex bouquet of aromas, with layers of chocolate, rich leather, kirsch, and cassis, accented by hints of dried herbs. These signature characteristics speak to the exceptional terroir of the Morisoli Vineyard on the Rutherford Bench, highlighting its signature depth and elegance. The palate is structured with fine-grained tannins and a distinct mouthfeel, speaking to the hallmark "Rutherford Dust." Subtle oak influences impart graham cracker spice, while the rich flavors of ripe plum, along with vibrant blue and black fruits, add layers of depth and complexity. Enjoy the development of this wine for years to come.

Plush aromas blackcurrants, blood plums, spices, lavender and graphite. The palate is full-bodied with soft tannins and integrated acidity, giving aromas of mocha, tobacco leaves, dark cherries and cedar. Refined and pure, with a powerful undertone. Drink or hold.

Etude's 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford is a single-vineyard wine in everything but name, being sourced exclusively from the Morisoli Vineyard (west of Highway 29, on the south side of Niebaum Lane). Scents of dusty loam and black cherries appear on the nose of this medium to full-bodied wine. Rich and concentrated, it finishes long and softly tannic, with a terrific sense of elegance. Already delicious, it should drink well for another 15 years or more. Like Etude's Oakville Cabernet, this wine is probably underpriced relative to its quality and provenance.

Textbook chocolaty black fruit, graphite, scorched earth, and baking spice notes all emerge from the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford, a medium to full-bodied 2021 that has the vintage's more focused, structured style, ripe, building tannins, terrific overall balance, and outstanding length. While it’s more accessible than the Coombsville release, I'd still hide bottles for at least 4-5 years if possible. It should see its 20th birthday in fine form.

Shimmers beautifully with cassis, mulberry puree and boysenberry pâte de fruit notes that glide over polished yet substantial tannins, while violet, anise and apple wood, plus a late ping of iron, fill in on the finish. Built for the cellar.

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford, from Morisoli, is especially fine this year. Vibrant and expansive, the 2021 offers tons of Rutherford signature. Inky dark, chocolate, leather, licorice and dried herbs abound. There's a wealth of old-school character here, but it also boasts a more forward, juicy expression of fruit.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

The Rutherford sub-region of Napa Valley centers on the town of Rutherford and covers some of Napa Valley’s finest vineyard real estate, spanning from the Mayacamas in the west, to the Vaca Mountains on the other side of the valley.

Inside of the Rutherford AVA, bordering the Mayacamas, is a stretch of uplands called the Rutherford Bench. (These bench lands technically run the length of Oakville as well). Mountain runoff creates deep, well-drained, alluvial soils on the bench, giving vine roots plenty of reason to permeate deep into the ground. The result is wine with great structure and complexity.

Rutherford Cabernet Sauvingons and Bordeaux Blends garner substantial attention for their enticing fragrances of dusty earth and dried herbs, broad and juicy mid-palates and lush and fine-grained tannins. The sub-appellation claims some of the valley’s most prized vineyards today, namely Caymus, Rubicon and Beckstoffer Georges III.

It is also home to Napa’s most influential and historic personalities. Thomas Rutherford, responsible for the appellation's name, made serious investments here in grape growing and wine production between the years of 1850 to 1880. Gustave Niebaum purchased a large swath of land and completed his winery in 1887, calling it “Inglenook.” Today this remains the oldest bonded winery in California. Georges Latour founded Beaulieu Vineyard in 1900, making it the oldest continuous winery in the state. Latour also hired the famous enologist, André Tchelistcheff, a man credited for single-handedly defining the modern Napa winemaking style.
