Etude Heirloom Pinot Noir 2008 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

The Heirloom 2008 in the glass reveals a dark ruby hue with a deep saturation and vibrancy. Aromas of dark cherry and berry fruit are complimented by spicebox components of cardamom, gingerbread, nutmeg and a hint of licorice. Flavors of concentrated and focused dark berry fruit are lifted by vibrant acidity and youthful notes, which build dimension and complexity with bottle age. Additionally, fine, plush tannins and minerality make this a hallmark vintage of Heirloom.

The 2008 Pinot Noir Heirloom was bottled with no fining or filtration (as were most of its siblings). Made from old Pinot Noir selections (hence the name), it displays a deep ruby/purple color along with sweet aromas of blueberries, boysenberries, blackberries, forest flora and Asian spices. This full-bodied, lush, complete Pinot should drink nicely for 7-10 years.

As early as the 1970s Carneros became known as a source of terrific Pinot Noir, and was one of the first California regions to gain such a reputation. The combination of sunny days, cooling fog and thin clay soils are tailor-made for the variety. Another factor in Pinot Noir’s prominent place here is vintners’ willingness to experiment widely. The history of the grape in Carneros is marked by continuous research into clonal variations, viticultural techniques and site selection. Careful evaluation over time has revealed a signature flavor profile as well. Complex aromas and flavors of cherry, red berry, spice, earth and cola appear time and again in Carneros Pinot Noir. To this day the appellation remains one of California’s standard bearers for the variety.
