Winemaker Notes

The wine displays a garnet red color with light orange reflections and an intense nose of dried fruits, complemented by notes of vanilla and underlying sweet red fruits, influenced by the sandy soil. On the palate, it achieves a harmonious balance of strength and elegance, with pleasant tannins that cleanse the palate and leave a lingering aromatic finish. It pairs particularly well with traditional Piedmontese first and second courses, as well as aged cheeses and dried fruits, making it ideal for enjoying in good company.

The 2020 Barolo 2020 Prapo is bright ruby-colored and reveals lifted aromas of dark minerals, black raspberries, sweet floral notes, and crushed pine needles. The palate is open and medium-bodied, with its fruity side shining all the way through to its clean finish. It has good freshness but lacks the power you would expect from Serralunga. That being said, it’s quite charming now, with a lot to offer over the coming 7-8 years, even if it’s not going to be the most long-lived.

The Ettore Germano 2020 Barolo Prapò shows polished, silky intensity and good length. There are oak and spice notes, but they remain well integrated. However, the bouquet is quite unique in the case of the Prapò, as it offers a combination of fruit and leafy tones that are sweet in character. I'm reminded of snow peas or dried herb and sweet orange.

This Barolo opens with a shy and reticent nose, gradually unveiling its super earthy character and high-toned red fruits like tart cherry and pomegranate. Intriguing notes of forest floor and aromatic sandalwood add depth and complexity. The palate showcases wild cherry, plum, and a hint of orange zest, supported by fine-grained tannins that provide an elegant structure and a lingering finish. Drink 2025-2040.

Bright cherry, raspberry, floral, tobacco and tar aromas and flavors are featured in this generous and firmly built red. Solid yet balanced, this persists with red fruit and earth notes on the long aftertaste. Best from 2027 through 2045.

Sleek and polished Barolo with medium body and tight but fine-textured tannins. It offers subtle notes of red fruit, citrus peel, spices and walnuts, ending with a lingering finish. Focused and balanced. Drink after 2026.

Responsible for some of the most elegant and age-worthy wines in the world, Nebbiolo, named for the ubiquitous autumnal fog (called nebbia in Italian), is the star variety of northern Italy’s Piedmont region. Grown throughout the area, as well as in the neighboring Valle d’Aosta and Valtellina, it reaches its highest potential in the Piedmontese villages of Barolo, Barbaresco and Roero. Outside of Italy, growers are still very much in the experimentation stage but some success has been achieved in parts of California. Somm Secret—If you’re new to Nebbiolo, start with a charming, wallet-friendly, early-drinking Langhe Nebbiolo or Nebbiolo d'Alba.
