    Winemaker Notes

For more than two decades, the Elke family has been growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes to be made into sparkling wine by Mumm Napa and Roederer Estate. Naturally, they have become aficionados of sparkling wine, and when the opportunity arose to make some sparkling wine under our own label, we jumped at it. This non-vintage Brut is made from grapes grown in select Mendocino vineyards. It is produced using the methode traditionelle, and is 40% Pinot Noir (for structure and power) and 60% Chardonnay (for richness and finesse). This non-vintage Brut is aged en tirage for seven months, resulting in a crisp and yeasty sparkler that will complement almost any food.

    Elke Winery Image
Elke Vineyards is a small, family-owned vineyard and winery. They started growing grapes over thirty years ago, and continute to value that connection to the land. Elke has prized vineyards in Anderson and Napa Valleys, and grows grapes for a number of celebrated Pinot Noir and sparkling wine houses, such as Roederer Estate, Au Bon Climat, Far Niente, Saintsbury, and Goldeneye.

In 1997, Elke began to save some of their favorite Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay grapes for their own wines. They produce limited quantities of each wine, using traditional, handcrafted winemaking at the winery in Anderson Valley. This type of winemaking allows Elke's wines to be "wines of a place," meaning that they will speak to you of where the grapes were grown, and the conditions under which they grew.

A large and diverse appellation within California’s North Coast AVA, Mendocino is home to several smaller sub-regions—most notably the Anderson Valley. This scenic region, with rolling hills covered in redwood forests as well as vineyards, is one of the world’s top producers of certified organically-grown grapes. Due to wide geographical and climatic variation, a vast array of wine styles can be found here.

A term typically reserved for Champagne and Sparkling Wines, non-vintage or simply “NV” on a label indicates a blend of finished wines from different vintages (years of harvest). To make non-vintage Champagne, typically the current year’s harvest (in other words, the current vintage) forms the base of the blend. Finished wines from previous years, called “vins de reserve” are blended in at approximately 10-50% of the total volume in order to achieve the flavor, complexity, body and acidity for the desired house style. A tiny proportion of Champagnes are made from a single vintage.

There are also some very large production still wines that may not claim one particular vintage. This would be at the discretion of the winemaker’s goals for character of the final wine.
