Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The palate and nose is filled with blackberry and ripe strawberry with a hint of sarsaparilla and a touch of sweet toasted oak. Sourced from three outstanding Paso Robles vineyards: Steinbeck, CoCaVin & Wine-Bush.

Pairs well with Ggilled pork and beef will pair perfectly with this wine. Great barbecue pairing is Gary's St. Louis pork spare ribs with his special seasoning - salt and pepper. This well balanced Zinfandel will also pair nicely with almost any Italian dishes made with a rich red meat sauce or enjoy a glass with a nice plate of charcuterie.

Made with grapes from the Steinbeck, Wine-Bush and Cocavin vineyards, this Zin is packed full of baking spice, dark strawberries, smoked beef, black pepper and gingerbread on the rich, inviting nose. The palate shows a tad more restraint, but offers juicy black plum, rounded cola, dried thyme, peppercorn and pencil lead flavors.

The 2014 Zinfandel Steinbeck Vineyard (100% Zinfandel) is a head turner that has tons of Zinfandel charm in its bramble, spice box, wild herbs and sweet red and black fruits. Rich, textured, medium to full-bodied, upfront and ready to go, it too should drink nicely for 4-5 years. It's also an excellent value.

In 1973, Gary Eberle began his career in the wine industry by heading his family’s Estrella River Winery in Paso Robles. Eberle’s pioneering spirit didn’t stop there. In 1983, Gary co-founded the Paso Robles Appellation and also opened the doors to his own Eberle Winery with the premiere of Eberle’s 1979 Cabernet Sauvignon.

Today, Eberle handcrafts 28,000 cases of wine each year producing Viognier, Chardonnay, Rosé, Rhône-Style blends, Zinfandel, Syrah, Barbera and Sangiovese. This year Eberle will celebrate their 40th Anniversary and remains one of the highest award-winning wineries in the United States.

Unapologetically bold, spice-driven and jammy, Zinfandel has secured its title as the darling of California vintners by adapting well to the state's diverse microclimates and landscapes. Born in Croatia, it later made its way to southern Italy where it was named Primitivo. Fortunately, the imperial nursery of Vienna catalogued specimens of the vine, and it later made its way to New England in 1829. Parading the true American spirit, Zinfandel found a new home in California during the Gold Rush of 1849. Somm Secret—California's ancient vines of Zinfandel are those that survived the neglect of Prohibition; today these vines produce the most concentrated, ethereal and complex examples.

Central Coast, California

Paso Robles has made a name for itself as a source of supple, powerful, fruit-driven Central Coast wines. But with eleven smaller sub-AVAs, there is actually quite a bit of diversity to be found in this inland portion of California’s Central Coast.

Just east over the Santa Lucia Mountains from the chilly Pacific Ocean, lie the coolest in the region: Adelaida, Templeton Gap and (Paso Robles) Willow Creek Districts, as well as York Mountain AVA and Santa Margarita Ranch. These all experience more ocean fog, wind and precipitation compared to the rest of the Paso sub-appellations. The San Miguel, (Paso Robles) Estrella, (Paso Robles) Geneso, (Paso Robles) Highlands, El Pomar and Creston Districts, along with San Juan Creek, are the hotter, more western appellations of the greater Paso Robles AVA.

This is mostly red wine country, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel standing out as the star performers. Other popular varieties include Merlot, Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Grenache and Rhône blends, both red and white. There is a fairly uniform tendency here towards wines that are unapologetically bold and opulently fruit-driven, albeit with a surprising amount of acidity thanks to the region’s chilly nighttime temperatures.
