The 2008 Familia Durigutti Malbec is blended with a little Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Bonarda and is aged for 24 months in French oak. It has a seductive, vanilla-scented bouquet with floral notes bursting from the glass: rose petals and violets, a touch of vanilla and coconut underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with fine supple tannins. There is an attractive citrus thread running through the vivacious red cherry and strawberry fruit, leading to a beautifully composed finish. This is a succinctly crafted Malbec that is irresistible now, but should age well.
Most distinguished and celebrated from Argentina’s Mendoza, Malbec has seen runaway success since the early 2000s. Mendoza’s agreeable, continental climate with hot, dry summers and cold snowy winters allows the perfect conditions for growing outstanding Malbec. This grape is easy to like for its lusty, deep flavors and aromas of blackberry, plum, red cherry, autumn spice and tilled earth. It’s easy to find delicious, fruit-driven, affordable everyday examples and in prices beyond, quite exceptional ones with dense, supple textures that make them capable of aging.
