Winemaker Notes

We have been involved with this vineyard since 2006 and began leasing the whole vineyard in 2013. This vineyard is 3 miles east of our estate ranch which puts it about 6 miles from the Pacific. The soils are ancient ocean floor origin with high iron, quartzite, and shale. After 20 years, the vine roots have penetrated into the subsoils rich in minerals with varying amounts of clay and sand. The lower vineyard blocks create a wine which is refreshing and complex with sound structure and elegance for the long haul. Another unique aspect of this vineyard is that it straddles both the Mendocino Ridge and Anderson Valley AVA’s and can be used as a vineyard designate in either appellation. In March 2018, the Wine Enthusiast rated this vineyard in their Top 5 vineyards in this northern coastal area. We of course, already knew it was a very special site.

COMMENTARY: Over the past decade, the Mendocino Ridge AVA has become one of the most exciting new grape growing regions in California. The 2016 Drew Family Cellars Valenti Vineyard is an outstanding wine. TASTING NOTES: This wine is bursting with richness and energy. Its aromas and flavors of cranberry to strawberries is persistent and lovely. Pair it with roast game birds. (Tasted: September 25, 2018, San Francisco, CA)

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

Essentially a northern extension of the Sonoma Coast AVA but part of Mendocino County, Mendocino Ridge is one of the rare appellations defined by elevation only. The Mendocino Ridge AVA is reserved only for vineyards at or above 1,200 feet between the Anderson Valley and Pacific Ocean.
