Winemaker Notes

The wine is amazingly deep in color with aromas and layers of flavors of cedar, caramelized anise, cassis, cocoa, sage and green olive. The wine is highly structured, as you would suspect from such a cool vintage, and shy at first, then expanding to a lovely full symphony of licorice, lavender and black currants.

Wine Enthusiast
Merlot from the family's vineyard in Lovall Valley informs the majority of this blend at 44%, with 36% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc in the wine as well. Dry and herbal, it sings in bold notes of red currant, cedar and anise, offering elegance around integrated tannins and a mouthcoating finish. Drink now through 2022.

James Suckling
Very ripe fruit with strawberry and raspberry pie aromas. Full body, soft and silky tannins and a savory finish. Fruit-forward style. A little dry on the finish. Slightly simple.

Double Eagle Winery Image
Double Eagle combines two passions of David Grieve and Vance Rose; it is the rarest of golf shots and it is also their evocative Bordeaux blend. Double Eagle is produced from Merlot grapes grown in the Grieve Family Vineyard in Lovall Valley, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon grapes grown in other areas of Napa Valley. Accessible only from Sonoma, yet located in Napa, Lovall Valley sits at 650 feet above sea level and is bordered on the west by Arrowhead Mountain. Huichica Creek runs the length of the valley bisecting the vineyard. The vineyard was planted in 1980, and in 1983 was adjoined with the neighboring parcel of 10 acres to create what is now Grieve Family Vineyard. Today, the vineyard consists of 16.73 planted acres, 12.23 of Sauvignon Blanc and 4.49 acres of Merlot.
