Winemaker Notes

Well-rounded, quaffable. A fine wine and one of Santenay's best-known. Good keeping potential.

Wine Spectator
Earth, sanguine and resin aromas augment the black currant, bilberry, violet, iron and sweet tobacco flavors. It's supple and saturated, keeping this red focused and long. Drink now through 2028. 100 cases imported.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Offering up aromas of plums, dark berries and baking chocolate, the 2018 Santenay 1er Cru Les Gravières is medium to full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, with refined tannins, lively acids and a demonstrative core of fruit. Seamless and integrated, this lovely Gravières is my favorite of this domaine's reds this year.

Domaine Vincent & Sophie Morey, France
Sophie and Vincent Morey both come from families of wine-growers. They set up their own domaine in 2006 and had their first harvest in 2007. When Vincent's father, Bernard Morey, a leading personality in the village of Chassagne-Montrachet, took his retirement, Vincent took over the a part of the holding. He already had twenty years of experience behind him. After studies at Beaune's Lycée Viticole and work-experience in St-Emilion in the Bordeaux region, Vincent rejoined the family domaine in 1986. In the same year Sophie was vinifying her first vintage for the Ménager-Belland domaine in Santenay. "In my family," Sophie declares with a smile, "the vines pass from mother to daughter." Vincent and Sophie Morey treat their vineyards as if they were gardens. “Fine wines start with good grapes,” they declare in unison.

Cote de Beaune, Burgundy

View all products

In the far southern end of the Côte de Beaune, Santenay forms a little notch that juts into the otherwise straight border with Côte Chalonnaise.

Santenay red wines show the true essence of red Burgundy at good price points and without demanding a lot of cellar time. Enticing aromas of rose-petal, violet, red fruits and licorice lead to sturdiness on the palate. With soils rich in oolitic limestone and marl, this is the home of well-constructed, hearty Pinot noir and represents a fantastic region to explore if you are just beginning your understanding of red Burgundy.

Reputable vineyards of Santenay include La Maladière, as well as the Premier Crus of La Comme, Clos de Tavannes, and Les Gravières.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”
