Winemaker Notes

The Cotes-du-Rhone is a blend of fruit from that doesn't quite fit in with the final blend of the Cairanne. In most vintages it is a tremendous value as it benefits from a fair amount of old-vine Grenache and Carignan. Ready out of the gate, it is a lighter-bodied wine with wonderful floral aromatics characteristic of wines aged in tank.

While slightly reduced on the nose, the quality of the 2012 Cotes du Rhone was apparent, and it reluctantly gave up darker-styled fruit and earthy nuances. Medium to full-bodied, rich and textured on the palate, with beautiful fruit, it has outstanding potential and should have 7-8 years of longevity.

Typically thought of as a baby Chateâuneuf-du-Pape, the term Côtes du Rhône actually doesn’t merely apply to the flatter outskirts of the major southern Rhône appellations, it also includes the fringes of well-respected northern Rhône appellations. White wines can be produced under the appellation name, but very little is actually made.

The region offers some of the best values in France and even some first-rate and age-worthy reds. Red wine varieties include most of the Chateâuneuf-du-Pape varieties like Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsault, and Counoise, as well as Carignan. White grapes grown include Grenache blanc, Roussanne and Viognier, among others.
