Winemaker Notes

Domaine Pierre MOREY cultivates several litlle plots in 6 lieux-dits distributed in the heart of the appellation and all around the village. Some plots have red soils, others are more chalky, with a lot of stones.

Blending of these vineyards (slope and gentle-slope) produces a charming wine which is soft in the mouth from its youth. In addition to the beautiful expression of red fruits, there is a good tannin balance, which suggests that these wines will taste best if aged from 5 to 8 years, in most vintages.

The Morey family quietly produces some of the best Monthélie around. The parcel was purchased by Pierre Morey and Jean-François Coche in 1984 and divided between the two domaines. Lovely, pure, crunchy Pinot fruit leads into a supple, juicy wine with a lovely core of juicy fruit and chalky minerality. Drinking Window 2018 - 2033

The 2015 Monthelie was a little muted on the nose when I tasted it from barrel. However, the palate is lovely with bright red berry fruit, orange sorbet and a fleshy, well-defined, joyous finish. This will be well worth looking out for once in bottle.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”
