Winemaker Notes

Échezeaux is loyal to its appellation through the finesse of its attack on the palate and its overall balance. But it's also a wine with pronounced acidity, which gives it freshness and structure and bestows upon it a sometimes austere finish.

BH 93
Burghound.com
Moderate wood spice, black fruit and an impressive complex array of aromas that run from hoisin to tea, leather, anise and warm earth merge into rich, full and beautifully well-balanced flavors that possess real energy and vibrancy on the relatively masculine and moderately structured finish. The Echézeaux does not usually outshine the Clos de Vougeot at this address but in 2004, I give it the nod and this too will benefit from at least a decade of cellar time.

Range: 90-93 Points

WS 92
Wine Spectator
Concentrated and sappy, exhibiting black cherry, cassis, floral and mineral aromas and flavors. Supple and vibrant, with firm, ripe tannins for support. Has a fine succulent finish, with an aftertaste of oak spice. Best from 2008 through 2016. 150 cases made.

Domaine Meo-Camuzet Méo-Camuzet Vineyard Winery Image

Méo-Camuzet is one of the most celebrated domaines of the Côte d’Or, located in the heart of prestigious Vosne-Romanée. The domaine boasts fourteen hectares of land in some of the most spectacular appellations and crus of Burgundy. Méo-Camuzet bottles four astounding grands crus, ten premier crus, several village wines, one Bourgogne Rouge, and only one white. Vigneron Jean-Nicolas Méo aims for balance and purity of fruit, which he accomplishes with terrific success. Though delicate and fine, even in their youth, the paradoxical concentration and intensity of these wines make them ideal for long cellar aging.

Claiming the two famous Grand Crus, Echezeaux and Grands Echezeaux, the identity of this village, Flagey-Echezeaux, rides predominantly on the glory of those two crus. All of the village or Premier Cru status vineyards in Flagey-Echezeaux market themselves under the name of their neighbor, Vosne-Romanée.

Echezeaux Pinot noir tends be light, bright and full of finesse, whereas those of Grands Echezeaux typically have more heft and complexity.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”
