Brilliant ruby color with powerful aromas of raspberry, tart cherry and black pepper. Balanced with just a touch of herb and spice. Not too heavy, not too light - this Cotes du Rhone is just right!

As the Belle Epoch drew to a close at the dawn of the 20th century, Alphonse Pradelle planted his first vines on the desolate, undeveloped property of Domaine des Gravennes, which literally translates to "stony place" in old French. It was here that Pradelle farmed Grenache and Syrah on the extremely sought after soil composed of alluvial and sandy clay, scattered with the picturesque galets (pudding stones) that the Rhone is known for. He sold his wine locally until the 1960s, when his son Raphael, along with wife Marie-Louise, decided to breathe new life into the estate by replanting the vines and increasing production. Fifty years later, Gravennes experiences great success with a newly modernized cellar and viticulture practices that emphasize the common values of the family (now in it’s fourth generation of winemakers): sustainability, protection of the soil and environment, conviviality, and a constant search for balance and elegance.

Domaine des Gravennes has been practicing biodynamic for over ten years and is in the process of U.S. certification. With an average vine age of 30 years and a family history steeped in the classic wines of the Southern Rhone, Gravennes produces some of the finest examples of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre in the region.

With bold fruit flavors and accents of sweet spice, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre form the base of the classic Rhône Red Blend, while Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise often come in to play. Though they originated from France’s southern Rhône Valley, with some creative interpretation, Rhône blends have also become popular in other countries. Somm Secret—Putting their own local spin on the Rhône Red Blend, those from Priorat often include Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In California, it is not uncommon to see Petite Sirah make an appearance.

Typically thought of as a baby Chateâuneuf-du-Pape, the term Côtes du Rhône actually doesn’t merely apply to the flatter outskirts of the major southern Rhône appellations, it also includes the fringes of well-respected northern Rhône appellations. White wines can be produced under the appellation name, but very little is actually made.

The region offers some of the best values in France and even some first-rate and age-worthy reds. Red wine varieties include most of the Chateâuneuf-du-Pape varieties like Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsault, and Counoise, as well as Carignan. White grapes grown include Grenache blanc, Roussanne and Viognier, among others.
