Winemaker Notes

The color is a clear, lychee pink. The nose is fruity and intense, with pleasant and complex aromas and flavors of tangerine and forest fruits.

One of the finest rosés in all the world, the 2015 Domaine de la Fouquette Cuvée Rosée d'Aurore elevates this genre to the next level. Wild and pure, this is one serious wine and yes, I really enjoyed it. Quite faint in color; active aromas of dried leaves, vivid minerality and tart red fruits, excellent richness and persistence; medium bodied, zesty and alive on the palate; dry, fine acidly, well balanced; frisky red fruit and mineral in the flavors; long finish, crisp aftertaste. With the skillful guidance of consulting oenologist Bruno Tringali, Jean-Pierre has established an environmentally friendly, but labor intensive regimen in the vineyard that includes green harvesting in early summer to limit yields, working the soil without use of chemicals, and harvesting by hand. In the cellar, the philosphy is minimal intervention. The results have been impressive. Fouquette’s Rosée d'Aurore, named for the Daziano's young daughter, is a cuvée blended especially for JW Selections. This wine is comprised of the classic cépages Grenache and Cinsault, and accented with the white variety, Rolle (aka Vermentino).

Cotes de Provence is an extensive but valuable appellation that includes vineyards bordering the main Provence appellations and extending all the way east to the border of Italy. Its sites vary from subalpine hills, which receive the cooling effects of the mountains to the north, to the coastal St-Tropez, a warm Mediterranean wine-producing region.

Here there is a new focus on quality rosé, as it defines four fifths of the region’s wines. Following in the rosé footsteps, a lot of new effort is going into the region’s red production. A new generation has turned its focus on high quality Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Carignan. Cotes de Provence white wines, which represent a miniscule part of the region as far as volume, are nonetheless worthy of consideration and can include any combination of Clairette, Semillon, Ugni Blanc and Vermentino.

Whether it’s playful and fun or savory and serious, most rosé today is not your grandmother’s White Zinfandel, though that category remains strong. Pink wine has recently become quite trendy, and this time around it’s commonly quite dry. Since the pigment in red wines comes from keeping fermenting juice in contact with the grape skins for an extended period, it follows that a pink wine can be made using just a brief period of skin contact—usually just a couple of days. The resulting color depends on grape variety and winemaking style, ranging from pale salmon to deep magenta.
