Winemaker Notes

Cabernet Franc in the most classic form – straight from its historic home in the Loire Valley. Deep red color with slight purple reflections, the nose is aromatic with bright raspberry and suggestions of graphite. On the palate, the wine is dry, but rich, with well balanced tannin and a lengthy, herbal finish.

This is a lovely cabernet franc, the blue tinge showing some reduction, as does the initial, natural wine scent of wild blackberries and bear scat. The wild berry fruit wins out in the end, the funk disappearing with air. The fragrance develops into red plum and mulberries, the grit of the tannins making this a mouthwatering red to serve with a lemon-pepper-rubbed filet mignon.

Cabernet Franc, a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon, is the subtler and more delicate of the Cabernets. Today Cabernet Franc produces outstanding single varietal wines across the wine-producing world. Somm Secret—One of California's best-kept secrets is the Happy Canyon appellation of Santa Barbara. Here Cabernet Franc shines as a single varietal wine or in blends, expressing sumptuous fruit, savory aromas and polished tannins.
