Winemaker Notes

The siren is screaming at the searchlights. This well appointed library is no shelter, but what better place await the edge of the world than here. A humidor well stocked with Cohiba Siglos and a decanter of rare Alpine kirsch shares the buffet with a glass bowl of ripe red currants, wild blueberries and raspberries. A bomb hits the coffee roaster across the street, ripping the heavy earth and tearing the bay laurel in the yard. Let it come, let it come you think as you light a cigar.

Blend: 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Cabernet Franc, 26% Petit Verdot, 7% Merlot, 4% Malbec

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot, the 2015 Sackcloth and Ashes is a straight up delicious red that's loaded with notions of cassis, incense, peppery herbs and hints of lead pencil. Medium to full-bodied, polished, elegant and with tons of fruit, drink this sexy, yet elegant 2015 over the coming 7-8 years.

Resembling a fine red wine from the Medoc, the well-built 2015 Desparada Sackcloth & Ashes Red Blend is stocked well with aromas and flavors of black fruits, savory herbs, and dusty chalk. The wine's stylish structure pairs it nicely with seared hangar steak. (Tasted: April 17, 2017, San Francisco, CA)

Desparada, California
Desparada Winery Video

Founded in 2010. Vailia Esh traveled around North & South American before finding her home in Paso Robles making wine. She loves the freedom and isn’t forced into one particular style. She’s free to play, to discover and push towards new horizons. Working in a place so young, there is an unavoidable temptation to use the guideposts left by regions like Pauillac, Chateauneuf or Montalcino. This is a place as singular as those, but she’s still plottingher own trail. That’s why the Desparada wines are guided more by spirit than style. Each wine stands for a particular vision, and in each vintage she uses her new knowledge, varietals and vineyards to bring that vision into sharper focus.

A major force on the global playing field, California is the world’s fourth largest wine-producing region on the planet and the majority of land under vine here is devoted to red varieties, covering nearly double the vineyard acreage of whites.

While the state’s incredibly diverse terrain and microclimates allow for countless red wine styles, the one factor unifying all California red wine is the abundance of sunshine and a long, consistent growing season, which leads to well-developed and fully ripened fruit.

The most famous region today, of course, is the acclaimed Napa Valley, where Cabernet Sauvignon reigns as king.

Sonoma County, nestled between Napa Valley and the Pacific Ocean, claims great variability in geography and microclimates. Here world-class Pinot Noir is possible from Sonoma’s cooler sites while old, gnarly Zinfandel vines survived Prohibition.

The Central Coast, Lodi and the Sierra Foothills also excel in the production of Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and remain active frontiers for newer varieties, namely Rhône and Spanish.

The cool Anderson Valley in California’s North Coast region is a fantastic source of Pinot noir.
