Winemaker Notes

This is truly a Cab-lovers merlot. The nose is big and complex. Spices, black pepper and dark fruit turn into vanilla, rich caramel and maraschino cherries. Waves of dried sage, mushroom, and that ever present forest floor evolve into rose and hints of floral notes. The palate is lean with noticeable tannins up front. The tannins soon mellow out to reveal dusty cocoa, chocolate and jammy fruit. The mineral finish evenly coats and leaves hints of oak and cedar. Just beautiful!

Floral red currant, coffee bean and mocha notes open to a dense core of vibrant, minerally acidity and tannins, wrapped in rich, supple cherry, toasty vanilla and spice-tinged fruit. Hands off for now.

With generous fruit and supple tannins, Merlot is made in a range of styles from everyday-drinking to world-renowned and age-worthy. Merlot is the dominant variety in the wines from Bordeaux’s Right Bank regions of St. Emilion and Pomerol, where it is often blended with Cabernet Franc to spectacular result. Merlot also frequently shines on its own, particularly in California’s Napa Valley. Somm Secret—As much as Miles derided the variety in the 2004 film, Sideways, his prized 1961 Château Cheval Blanc is actually a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

A small and picturesque valley separating Napa Valley on its south border and Alexander Valley to its north, Knights Valley excels in similar varieties as the two aforementioned appellations, namely red Bordeaux varieties and blends, as well as Sauvignon blanc. Originally established by Beringer Vineyards, today several outstanding producers claim acreage here. The circadian cooling effects of the nearby Pacific Ocean create a nighttime respite for vineyards during the hot growing season.
