Winemaker Notes

The Dry Creek Valley is one of the best places in California for the production of complex, balanced zinfandels. The Dashe Cellars Dry Creek Zinfandel is an excellent example of a classic Dry Creek Valley zin: intense, mouthfilling yet very balanced.

The 2014 Zinfandel from Dry Creek Valley has the varietal’s peppery, raspberry and black cherry fruit, earth and spice, nice meatiness, and a character that begs for something prepared outside on the grill. This is a lovely, fresh, pure, medium to full-bodied Zinfandel to drink over the next 3-4 years.

Spot on in its varietal precision and a nicely managed wine in every respect, Dashe's appellation bottling from the Dry Creek Valley is everything that well-made Zinfandel should be. There are others that can claim more potency and power just as there are some that are deeper and more complex, but this one gets the nod for its constancy, class and cohesion, and it is a flavorful, but never-too-pushy rendition that will drink splendidly with an especially wide range of foods over the next four or five years.

Dashe Cellars, founded in 1996, blends Anne's classic French winemaking training with the experience Michael has gained at Ridge Vineyards, Far Niente and Chateau Lafite-Rothschild. Together, the Dashes' strive to create authentic, site-focused wines that capture the charm and personality of top, independent vineyards throughout Sonoma County and beyond. In 2007, Michael and Anne started a new series of wines that they dubbed "Les Enfants Terribles", wines that were inspired by many of the French wines they admire, with balance, complexity, lower alcohols, beautiful fruit aromatics and velvety textures. These easy-to drink and expressive wines are a great complement to their lineup of classic "signature wines".

Unapologetically bold, spice-driven and jammy, Zinfandel has secured its title as the darling of California vintners by adapting well to the state's diverse microclimates and landscapes. Born in Croatia, it later made its way to southern Italy where it was named Primitivo. Fortunately, the imperial nursery of Vienna catalogued specimens of the vine, and it later made its way to New England in 1829. Parading the true American spirit, Zinfandel found a new home in California during the Gold Rush of 1849. Somm Secret—California's ancient vines of Zinfandel are those that survived the neglect of Prohibition; today these vines produce the most concentrated, ethereal and complex examples.

Dry Creek Valley Wine

Sonoma County, California

View all products

A multifaceted and highly reputable sub-region of Sonoma, Dry Creek Valley is responsible for a wide range of wine styles—both red and white. One of the smallest AVAs in California, Dry Creek Valley has a winning combination of ideal geography and climate. Fertile, well-drained soils create concentrated varietal character while long, warm days, bookended by cool nights, allow grapes to reach full phenolic ripeness and balance. The warm and welcoming appellation is home to a number of family-owned vineyards and wineries that place a strong emphasis on sustainable farming practices.

Zinfandel reigns supreme here and still produces in a great number of very old vineyards—often 100 years old or older. These old vines create a powerful, voluptuous and sultry wine unlike those of any other region. Sauvignon Blanc, the valley’s signature white grape, also performs exceptionally well. Many other varieties grow comfortably here, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Syrah. Petite Sirah is often found in blends with Zinfandel.
