Winemaker Notes

Experience and youth get together for this wine. Medianías has been produced by CVNE, with more than 140 year of history in Rioja, and Suertes del Marqués, which with only 10 years has managed to put the wines of Canary Islands and in especial those from the Valle de la Orotava, in an international scene. From a mutual admiration arose the idea of working together to produce a unique wine which satisfied both wineries, and every vintage with a different result but conserving its appealing. Local grapes, Listán Negro, Vijariego Negro, with an elegant passage through wood and preserving all the volcanic and fresh character of the island.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The affordable red 2018 Medianías was produced with Listán Negro from the ancient cordón trenzado vineyards Habanera, La Florida and Fortaceros, and it fermented in concrete tanks with 20% full clusters and indigenous yeasts. It was partly aged in 500-liter oak vats and 2,500-liter oak foudre for nine months, and part of the volume was kept in concrete. This is a little rounder and has more black fruit with a balsamic and creamy touch that gives it a slightly more commercial profile. It has fine tannins and a slight bitterness in the finish.

CVNE, Spain
CVNE Winery Video

Cvne, is situated in Rioja in the traditional neighborhood of the station, where the oldest wineries of Rioja Alta established themselves, for the main reason of transporting their goods to the port of Bilbao.

In 1879, two brothers decided to set up a business in the recently flourishing trade of the wine business. C.V.N.E., Compañía Vinicola del Norte de España (The Northern Spanish Wine Company) or la Cuné, as it is commonly known in Haro, was created. This cellar still reflects the origins of the company and is kept in the traditional neighborhood of the Haro station.

The Cune winery in Haro, is made up of a group of buildings, mostly from the 19th century and arranged around a courtyard surrounded by pavilions for the purpose of wine production, aging, and bottling.

Beyond the usual suspects, there are hundreds of red grape varieties grown throughout the world. Some are indigenous specialties capable of producing excellent single varietal wines, while others are better suited for use as blending grapes. Each has its own distinct viticultural characteristics, as well as aroma and flavor profiles, offering much to be discovered by the curious wine lover. In particular, Portugal and Italy are known for having a multitude of unique varieties but they can really be found in any region.
