Cuvaison Estate Pinot Noir 1999 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

Cuvaison's Carneros Pinot Noir comes from the 400-acre estate in the southern part of Napa Valley. This cool climate vineyard allows near perfect conditions year after year to produce world class Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Merlot. Controlling all farming aspects within the estate vineyard gives Cuvaison an advantage in producing the best quality fruit therefore minimizing over manipulation at the winery. Winemaker Steven Rogstad, sums it up best, "My style and philosophy are based on expressing the unique character of our estate grapes and doing as little as possible to them. When one has such wonderful fruit to work with, that should be one's emphasis."

Color: Warm tones of red currant.

Aroma: Strawberry, boysenberry, allspice and vanilla.

Taste Well knit flavors of wild strawberries, licorice, orange peel, with a lively long finish. An elegant and restrained Pinot Noir with fine balance and delicious fruit.

As early as the 1970s Carneros became known as a source of terrific Pinot Noir, and was one of the first California regions to gain such a reputation. The combination of sunny days, cooling fog and thin clay soils are tailor-made for the variety. Another factor in Pinot Noir’s prominent place here is vintners’ willingness to experiment widely. The history of the grape in Carneros is marked by continuous research into clonal variations, viticultural techniques and site selection. Careful evaluation over time has revealed a signature flavor profile as well. Complex aromas and flavors of cherry, red berry, spice, earth and cola appear time and again in Carneros Pinot Noir. To this day the appellation remains one of California’s standard bearers for the variety.
