Winemaker Notes

Deep garnet in color with notes of boysenberry, raspberry and cranberries, this fruity Tempranillo is laced with mulled wine spices, cherry tobacco and your favorite leather bomber jacket. Broad in the mouth with a dusting of silky tannins and a beautiful plum-jam finish, this wine pairs with grilled meats and vegetables, paellas, tomato-based soups and sauces, charcuterie and full-bodied cheeses.

This delicious wine is fresher and more lively than typical California Tempranillos. Cola, red cherry and vanilla aromas combine for a beautiful nose while the palate shows tart sour cherry and slight hints of leather. Both the acidity and tannic grip are strong but expertly measured.

Notoriously food-friendly, long-lasting and Spain’s most widely planted grape, Tempranillo is the star variety of red wines from Rioja and Ribera del Duero. The Rioja terms Joven, Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva indicate both barrel and bottle time before release. Traditionally blended in Rioja with Garnacha, plus a bit of Mazuelo (Carignan) and Graciano, the Tempranillo in Ribera del Duero typically stands alone. Somm Secret—Tempranillo claims many different names depending on location. In Penedès, it is called Ull de Llebre and in Valdepeñas, goes by Cencibel. Known as Tinta Roriz in Portugal, Tempranillo plays an important role in Port wine.

Ranging from cool and foggy in the west to warm and dry in the east, the Santa Ynez Valley is a climatically diverse growing area. The most expansive AVA within the larger Santa Barbara County region, Santa Ynez is also home to a wide variety of soil types and geographical features. The appellation is further divided into four distinct sub-AVAs—Sta. Rita Hills, Ballard Canyon, Los Olivos District and Happy Canyon—each with its own defining characteristics.

A wide selection of grapes is planted here—more than sixty different varieties, and counting. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir dominate in the chilly west, while Zinfandel, Rhône blends, and Bordeaux blends rule the arid east. Syrah is successful at both ends of the valley, with a lean and peppery, Old-World sensibility closer to the coast and lush berry fruit further inland.
