Winemaker Notes

2001 was a classic vintage, with ideal conditions for making powerful yet elegant wines. There was not a single heat spike over 100 °F during the entire ripening season. Warm days and cool, foggy nights resulted in inky color and full, complex flavors. The spare rainfall during the winter months favored a smaller than average crop, contributing uncommon intensity to the wine.

Napa veteran Cathy Corison has crafted a blended wine of beauty and power. Compared to her Kronos bottling, this Cab is for immediate consumption, although it should hold well for some years. It's lush and gentle in tannins, with upfront flavors of blackberries, cocoa and green olives, and possesses great balance and charm.

With tenacity and determination, Cathy Corison has forged a life of wine that has spanned more than three decades, transcended formidable challenges and surpassed her wildest dreams.
Cathy discovered her passion for wine while pursuing a bachelor's degree in Biology at Pomona College in Claremont, California. Inspired by the notion that wine is "alive at every level," she went on to receive a Master's in Enology from U.C. Davis in the mid 1970's.
Many years of winemaking for others, including Chappellet Vineyard, Staglin Family Vineyard, York Creek Vineyards and Long Meadow Ranch, honed her skills and left her eager to express her own winemaking voice. In 1987 she made the first vintage of Corison Cabernet. "There was a wine inside me that needed to be made", she says. The harvest of 2016 marks Cathy's 30th vintage of Corison Cabernet!

A major force on the global playing field, California is the world’s fourth largest wine-producing region on the planet and the majority of land under vine here is devoted to red varieties—they cover nearly double the vineyard acreage compared to whites.

While the state’s incredibly diverse terrain and microclimates allow for countless red wine styles, the one factor unifying all California red wine is the abundance of sunshine and a long, consistent growing season, which leads to well-developed and fully ripened fruit.

The most famous region today, of course, is the acclaimed Napa Valley, where Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Bordeaux Blends garner global attention and in some cases, cult status.

Sonoma County, nestled between Napa Valley and the Pacific Ocean, claims great variability in geography and microclimates with vineyards climbing up mountains, reaching far into valleys and stretching along some the state’s most dramatic coastlines. Here world-class Pinot Noir is possible from Sonoma’s cooler sites while Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon do well in its warmer locations.

The Central Coast, Lodi and the Sierra Foothills also excel in the production of Zinfandel, and remain active new frontiers for Rhône and Spanish varieties.

Mendocino in California’s cool North Coast region is a fantastic source of Pinot noir.

Winemaking in California dates back to the 18th century when Spanish missionaries planted the first wine grapes. But the industry experienced its first boom with the Gold Rush in the last half of the 19th century when miners brought vines to the Sierra Foothills.
