Winemaker Notes

With their 2014 vintage, they celebrate their 10th Continuum release! This wine, while having beautiful vibrancy and richness of body, is more approachable than the well-regarded 2013 vintage. A dense purple robe and vibrant violet rim lead to aromas of cassis, cardamom, espresso and graphite. 2014 shows purity of site and fruit; a core of black plum and cherry, intertwined with layers of exotic spice, heightened by ripe, polished tannins, natural vibrancy and a long silky finish. This vintage reveals the harmonious balance of fruit, site and season from our Sage Mountain Vineyard at Continuum Estate. It has all the body and age worthiness to carry forward for decades to come. Very expressive already, 2014 Continuum is an estate blend.

Blend: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 15% Petit Verdot, and 5% Merlot

JS 99
James Suckling
Fabulous aromas of blueberries, blackcurrants, sage and mint. Lead pencil and graphite, too. Full body and ultra-fine tannins that are slowly transformed to ripe and beautiful fruit. Super polished and textured. Great finish. Drink in 2022, but it's hard not to drink now. This harkens back to the great Mondavi reserves of the 1970s in texture and construction.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2014 Proprietary Red is comprised of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 15% Petit Verdot and 5% Merlot. Deep garnet-purple colored, it is still very primary and comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant crushed blueberries, black cherries, blackcurrants and violets notes with suggestions of dark chocolate, cast iron pan, lavender and underbrush. Medium to full-bodied, firm, very finely crafted and possessing great finesse, it finishes long and layered.

Continuum is a celebration of the Mondavi family's proud history in Napa Valley; a single wine from a single estate committed to standing in the company of the great wines of the world. Located high atop Pritchard Hill on the eastern side of the Napa Valley, Continuum is a unique blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Tim Mondavi believes that wine is an artistic expression of man's harmony with nature and as such, production practices at Continuum honor and support the vineyards through balancing the essence of classic techniques with modern day innovations. Continuum's goat is to craft balanced wine of power, finesse and elegance - wines that re expressions of the land, the people and the vintage.

Continuum uses a variety of gentle techniques including Burgundian manual punchdowns, Bordelais rack and returns, and automated pump overs to keep the cap wet and well incorporated into the must. In addition, the wine lees that settle after fermentation on the tank bottom are stirred regularly into the wine to nourish, enrich and polish the tannins. After fermentation is complete, all lots are drained and placed in 225 liter French oak barrels from various coopers, mainly Taransaud and François Freres, for elevage.

Undoubtedly proving its merit over and over, Napa Valley is a now a leading force in the world of prestigious red wine regions. Though Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa Valley, other red varieties certainly thrive here. Important but often overlooked include Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties well-regarded on their own as well as for their blending capacities. Very old vine Zinfandel represents an important historical stronghold for the region and Pinot noir is produced in the cooler southern parts, close to the San Pablo Bay.

Perfectly situated running north to south, the valley acts as a corridor, pulling cool, moist air up from the San Pablo Bay in the evenings during the hot days of the growing season, which leads to even and slow grape ripening. Furthermore the valley claims over 100 soil variations including layers of volcanic, gravel, sand and silt—a combination excellent for world-class red wine production.
