Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Spicy aromatics of licorice and mocha lead to a rich palate of cassis and black cherry flavors. The wine has a lively acidity that will support the flavors for years of exceptional enjoyment.

Shows the packed dark fruit profile of this vintage. Plum, blackberry and black currant preserve flavors wrangle for the lead, backed by licorice snap and bramble notes on the energetic finish. For fans of the packs-a-punch style. Drink now through 2032.

Attractive, ripe dark berries, dominated by blackberries and framed in oak spice. The palate has a very fluid, ribbon-like core of plush dark-fruit flavor. Smooth, long finish.

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is a terrific little Napa Cabernet that has plenty of gamey blueberry fruits, earth, iron, and underbrush notes in its plump, rounded, sexy profile. Drink it over the coming 7-8 years. This wine is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Petit Verdot, and 10% Merlot, all aged 21 months in 50% new French oak.

Coho, California
Coho is the shared aspiration of Brooks Painter and Gary Lipp to produce flavorful, balanced wines. Grown in select cool-climate vineyards, Coho wines emphasize fruit purity and vitality. Our combined experience working for California wineries totals almost sixty years: both of us involved in all aspects of our craft, acquiring the skills to bottle our passion.

Our choice of Coho as the name of our brand might seem curious as it doesn’t invoke images of vineyards or wine, but to us the salmon embodies an innate wisdom so essential to understanding ourselves and our environment. As stewards of the land winemakers must strive to sustain our habitat and the species that share it. And like the salmon we need the steadfast will to keep going no matter how difficult the journey.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
