Winemaker Notes

Les Poyeux is a 2.9 hectare plot on the estate's sandiest soils. The vines are 40 to 70 years old, and some of the grapes from this parcel go into Le Clos. The barrels used are made by a tonnelier who only produces 250 barrels a year. Rougeard buys 50 of those each year to produce Le Bourg. Les Poyeux is vinified in the barrels that served as new oak for Le Bourg the vintage prior.

Also quite reductive at this stage, some aeration will enable its aromatic complexity to unfold, revealing floral notes of lilies and violets as well as a touch of Bourbon vanilla. The palate is full-bodied yet delicate and fresh, sustained by classy, polished tannins. The liquorice-infused finish has a tell-tale, appealing touch of gastronomic bitterness.

The 2014 Saumur Champigny Les Poyeux is very aromatic on the nose that exhibits perfectly ripe cherry notes. Generously fruity, intense and with excellent concentration, this is a silky, super ripe yet fresh Cabernet with fine and crunchy tannins and floral notes from nose to tail.
