    Winemaker Notes

    Much of the Syrah and Merlot came from our Sonoma Coast Vineyards called the Lazy C and P. The balance of the Syrah is from the Central Coast areas of Paso Robles and Shandon where those grapes produce dark, rich wine. The Cabernet Franc is from a hillside vineyard planted on rocky, red soil made of decomposed granite. This vineyard is east of Lodi and the irrigation is managed using “deficit irrigation" to control vigorous growth and increase flavor and color intensity. The Petite Sirah vineyard is on its “fifth leaf" and grows at the base of the foothills in the south-east corner of Sacramento county. It is cooled by the Sacramento Delta breezes and the grapes are dark and flavorful.

    Medium-bodied and complex, flavors of chocolate, berries, cherries and licorice abound. The black pepper finish settles with smooth tannins. You can drink red truck anywhere, anytime (it pairs well with pizza and tomato based dishes). And for you die-hard Cline fans, take it for a spin and floor it baby, metaphorically speaking of course!

    Cline Family Cellars is a family-owned and operated winery founded by Fred and Nancy Cline in 1982 in Oakley, CA. The winery facilities were relocated in 1991 to the Sonoma Valley, on a 350-acre estate in the Carneros district. The Cline winery and vineyards are built on a foundation of deeply rooted respect for the land and love of winemaking. Recognized for its rich portfolio of wines, Cline is one of the pioneers of California’s Rhone Rangers movement, and the largest holder of 100+ year-old-vine vineyards in California.

    A major force on the global playing field, California is the world’s fourth largest wine-producing region on the planet and the majority of land under vine here is devoted to red varieties, covering nearly double the vineyard acreage of whites.

    While the state’s incredibly diverse terrain and microclimates allow for countless red wine styles, the one factor unifying all California red wine is the abundance of sunshine and a long, consistent growing season, which leads to well-developed and fully ripened fruit.

    The most famous region today, of course, is the acclaimed Napa Valley, where Cabernet Sauvignon reigns as king.

    Sonoma County, nestled between Napa Valley and the Pacific Ocean, claims great variability in geography and microclimates. Here world-class Pinot Noir is possible from Sonoma’s cooler sites while old, gnarly Zinfandel vines survived Prohibition.

    The Central Coast, Lodi and the Sierra Foothills also excel in the production of Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and remain active frontiers for newer varieties, namely Rhône and Spanish.

    The cool Anderson Valley in California’s North Coast region is a fantastic source of Pinot noir.
