Winemaker Notes

Aromas of fresh plums, dried figs, and clove fuse with flavors of juicy red fruits, dried fall leaves, chocolate and dusty tannins.

This full-bodied wine is very firm in texture, stuffed with ripe blackberry, melted butter and black-cherry flavors and saturated with velvety, insistent tannins that need time to mellow. It's nicely mouthcoating and blends great fruit notes with black pepper and clove nuances. Best after 2024.

COMMENTARY: The 2016 OVIS Petit Verdot is in a class by itself. TASTING NOTES: This is a concentrated, powerful example of this grape variety. Its balance is excellent. Pair the wine's fullness with a rare cut of prime rib. (Tasted: September 11, 2019, San Francisco, CA)

One of the original Bordeaux varieties, Petit Verdot has a bold structure, color and aromas, which allow it to make a significant difference in Bordeaux Blends—even in modest amounts. While it isn’t planted in Bordeaux in great quantities anymore, its virtues are increasingly identified elsewhere. Somm Secret—Producing phenomenal single-varietal wines in hot and dry locations in the New World, Petit Verdot also finds a happy home in parts of Spain as well as in in Portugal’s Alentejo where it gracefully blends with the regions' indigenous varieties.

Located within the greater Clear Lake appellation, the Red Hills AVA is perhaps the hottest spot right now in Lake County for new Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards. Recognizing the potential of its volcanic and obsidian heavy soils, many respected growers are flocking to the area. Andy Beckstoffer, a leader in escalating the quality and recognition of Napa Valley, has already invested heavily in the area.
