Winemaker Notes
Pairs well with beef, hearty pastas and veal.
Planted in 1973, the south-facing Cold Creek Vineyard is a warm, dry site with high heat accumulation. The low yielding old vines produce small clusters and small berries, resulting in intense varietal flavors and deep color. The site’s weak, loamy sand and gravel soils with low-water holding capacity produce moderate crops and concentrated grapes. Cold Creek vineyard is LIVE and Salmon Safe certified.

James Suckling
This is very dusty with a powdery tannin texture. Full to medium body, juicy fruit and a fresh and clean finish that holds lots of flavor. Cocoa and currants. Subtle and fine. Drink or hold.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The inky colored 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Cold Creek Vineyard checks in as 100% Cabernet and saw 22 months in 64% French and American oak. Ripe, sexy, textured and with real density, it gives up lots of chocolate, caramelized plum, vanilla bean, and currant-like aromas and flavors. It has the texture to drink nicely even today, but I’m sure it will keep for at least a decade.

Aromas of black fruit, spiced plum, vanilla and herb lead to full dark fruit flavors. It shows a lot of ripeness but keeps it in balance.

Washington produces so many exciting wines, and that definitely includes Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. With over 10,000 acres under vine, Cabernet Sauvignon is now the most widely-grown varietal in the state. Terrific examples hail from sub-appellations like Red Mountain, Wahluke Slope, Horse Heaven Hills and Walla Walla Valley. One of the fascinations of these Columbia Valley Cabs is that they so often seem to have one foot in the New World and one in the Old. Representing the former are characteristics like the ripe, forward fruit that results from long sunny days during the growing season (up to two hours longer than in much of California). Old World similarities include an undeniable brightness from acidity, as well as notes of herbs, graphite and a dusty, sometimes gravelly minerality.
Whether you’re looking for a budget bottle for everyday enjoyment, or a stellar, world-class wine with tremendous aging potential, Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon wines can deliver the goods! Among the many fine options are bottles from Columbia Crest, Chateau Ste. Michelle, L’ecole #41, Quilceda Creek and Leonetti.
