Winemaker Notes

Blending demands rigour, concentration and sensitivity. The work involves associating, dissociating and tasting to give life to a new vintage that remains faithful to the spirit of Poujeaux.

The 2021 Poujeaux was impacted by the frost, so there is more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend this year. This was picked September 30 to October 14. It is well-defined on the nose, offering brambly red berry fruit, incense and light pine cone scents; the sense of airiness here is very appealing. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and saline, with firm but fine tannins and touch of sour cherry and graphite on the precise finish. This is a very commendable Poujeaux that I suspect will age well in bottle. -Neal Martin

Pretty spice, dried mushroom, lavender, violet and subtle currant aromas and flavors. Medium body, fine tannins and delicious freshness. Nicely done for the vintage. Drinkable now but can improve for three to six years.

Concentrated blackcurrant nose. Ripe and juicy, this feels softly plump with a plush mouthfeel and satisfying weight to the tannic structure. It has elements of cool blue fruits, liquorice and clove that give a spiced hit on the tongue and a bitter dark chocolate and green peppercorn finish that gives it the slightest bit of rusticity still. A nice expression, unfussy and super easy to like. Shows good promise. Will be interesting to taste in bottle.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.
