Winemaker Notes
This wine has a very young, purple color with violet highlights. The aromas are clean, with very good intensity. Fresh notes of blackberries and black currants dominate an aromatic profile of great character and complexity. On the palate the wine is powerful, with pronounced tannins forming the foundation of a still-young structure that is massive and balanced. The wine's freshness will be long-lasting, as has been seen in older vintages of Pavie Decesse. The finish is long and generous, displaying the mature character typical of wines that age gracefully; with sufficient time to breathe, its full dimension becomes evident.

Planted in pure limestone above Gerard Perse’s other famous vineyard/terroir, Chateau Pavie, this 10-acre site’s vines average 47 years of age. Fashioned from remarkably low yields, this blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc is a powerful, dense, tannic wine that will require considerable time to round into shape. It exhibits a dense purple color along with sweet aromas of mulberries, black currants, minerals, cold steel, graphite, and background spice. Full-bodied, highly-extracted, dense, and made in an unfashionably tannic, broodingly backward style, this is a wine for the ages. It requires 8-10 years of cellaring, and should last for 25-30+.

Shows very floral, almost exotic fruit on the nose and palate. Full-bodied, with racy tannins and a long, silky finish. Pretty and focused. Best after 2012.

Château Pavie-Decesse was long hidden by the shadow of its older brother, Château Pavie. The two estates, Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Emilion, were separated in 1885 but keep a lot of similarities. Both own by Gérard Perse since 1997 and benefiting from an exceptional location on the limestone plateau of Saint-Emilion. With 3.5 hectares of prime land, it is planted with 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The vines are a respectable 43 years old on average and a draconian level of requirement is practiced in the vineyard to obtain the most beautiful and mature harvest each year. The grapes are picked and sorted by hand, then fermented in nine temperature-controlled wooden vats for three weeks to produce approximately 600 cases per year.
