COMMENTARY: Looking for a Saint-Émilion in the value category can be one of the most challenging tasks in the wine world. As a taster, I have come across many delicious wines in this AOC only to be shaking my head at their prices. The 2015 Château Busquet—from the satellite appellation of Lussac-Saint-Émilion is one of best deals in the marketplace. TASTING NOTES: This wine exhibits red currants, cherries, and dried herbs in its aromas and flavors. Its soft palate, yet persistent palate makes it an excellent pairing wine with grilled lamb chops. The 2015 Busquet has plenty of pure red currant and cranberry fruit on the nose, with nicely integrated oak and fine mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. It has more body and density than the 2014 Busquet and a slightly pinched finish that will mellow during bottle aging. Drink over the next decade.

In most of France, wines are named by their place of origin and not by the type of grape (with the exception of Alsace). Just like a red Burgundy is by law, always made of Pinot noir, a red Bordeaux is a blended wine composed mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Depending on the laws of the village from which the grapes come, the conditions of the vintage and decisions of the winemaker, the blend can be further supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot and in rare cases, Carmenere. So popular and repeated has this mix of grape varieties become worldwide, that the term, Bordeaux Blend, refers to a wine blended in this style, regardless of origin.
