Winemaker Notes

Bellevue Mondotte's two-hectares have produced a complete wine, with very fine, ripe fruit aromas of cherries, black currants, and fresh blackberries. The harvest's clearly apparent maturity does not preclude an appealing elegance. In the mouth the wine is smooth, powerful and full-bodied, with a good tannic presence, balance and extraction. An attractive, flavorful, mouthwatering finish is accompanied by tight tannins to prolong the length of a still-aging wine, made from some of the vintage's finest Merlot.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The smallest of the Perse estates, this tiny property situated on pure limestone produces a wine made from a blend of 90% Merlot and the rest equal parts Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. One of the superstars of this vintage, the 2012 is opaque purple and exhibits tremendous concentration and richness, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and a layered texture that builds incrementally without any heaviness or cloying characteristics. This is stunning, great, old-style, yet progressively made Bordeaux to drink over the next 25-30 years. The alcohol level is 14.3%.

A young red with coffee, chocolate, red chili and berry character. Chalk and salt flakes. Full body, velvety tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Super focused for the vintage. The 90% merlot shows itself. But truly a top wine for the vintage. Try in 2017.

A blend of 90% Merlot and the balance Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon from the Perse team, the 2012 Bellevue Mondotte is a deep ruby/purple colored effort that offers serious amounts of blackberry and blackcurrant fruit to go with tons of graphite, licorice, chocolate, and dried herbs. Big, rich, and locked and loaded, with full-bodied power, plenty of toasty oak, ripe tannin, and stunning purity, drink it anytime over the coming 20-25 years.

Until recently, tiny Chateau Bellevue-Mondotte, nestled on the Pavie plateau, was virtually unknown by wine connoisseurs. The size of the vineyard - just 2.5 hectares - was undoubtedly the main reason for this involuntary anonymity. However, the second part of the chateau's name, reminiscent of its famous neighbors La Mondotte and Chateau Troplant-Mondot, gives us an idea of Chateau Bellevue-Mondotte's exceptional terrior.

Marked by its historic fortified village—perhaps the prettiest in all of Bordeaux, the St-Émilion appellation, along with its neighboring village of Pomerol, are leaders in quality on the Right Bank of Bordeaux. These Merlot-dominant red wines (complemented by various amounts of Cabernet Franc and/or Cabernet Sauvignon) remain some of the most admired and collected wines of the world.

St-Émilion has the longest history in wine production in Bordeaux—longer than the Left Bank—dating back to an 8th century monk named Saint Émilion who became a hermit in one of the many limestone caves scattered throughout the area.

Today St-Émilion is made up of hundreds of independent farmers dedicated to the same thing: growing Merlot and Cabernet Franc (and tiny amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon). While always roughly the same blend, the wines of St-Émilion vary considerably depending on the soil upon which they are grown—and the soils do vary considerably throughout the region.

The chateaux with the highest classification (Premier Grand Cru Classés) are on gravel-rich soils or steep, clay-limestone hillsides. There are only four given the highest rank, called Premier Grand Cru Classés A (Chateau Cheval Blanc, Ausone, Angélus, Pavie) and 14 are Premier Grand Cru Classés B. Much of the rest of the vineyards in the appellation are on flatter land where the soils are a mix of gravel, sand and alluvial matter.

Great wines from St-Émilion will be deep in color, and might have characteristics of blackberry liqueur, black raspberry, licorice, chocolate, grilled meat, earth or truffles. They will be bold, layered and lush.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.
